Spurs open 2013-14 Season against Memphis Grizzlies

Your reigning Western Conference Champions; Tim Duncan, Tony Parker, Manu Ginobili and Boris Diaw are back as are Tiago Splitter, Danny Green, Kawhi Leonard, Cory Joseph, Matt Bonner, Aron Baynes and Nando de Cola.  Add new free agents Jeff Ayers, Marco Belinelli and the Spurs are ready to take on the Western Conference and the NBA.

The season opens with a heavy heart as the franchise knows they were mere seconds from another championship.

“Suffice it to say, I’ve thought about it every day,” admitted head coach Gregg Popovich, speaking more than three months after the shot. “I’m wondering if it’ll go away. I’m anxious for it to happen, but it hasn’t happened yet.”

But if it is one thing you can count on from a Spurs team, is that they will be ready to take the floor from the first to the last tip of the season.

“Everybody’s ready to go,” Popovich said after practice Tuesday. “Preseason is over with and everybody on every team is anxious to play.”

Spurs Take Game One of the NBA Finals

The San Antonio Spurs, armed with nine days of rest, came into Miami confident and ready to play Spurs basketball.  The Spurs not only walked out of American Airlines Arena with a 92-88 victory as well as home court advantage.

The final minutes of the fourth quarter proved even more exhilarating then the first three plus quarters, which were pretty exciting.  Tony Parker scored 10 of his 21 points in the fourth and found himself shooting a miraculous jumper with 5.2 seconds left.

“It was a crazy play,” Parker said. “I thought I lost the ball three or four times. And it didn’t work out like I wanted it to. At the end I was just trying to get a shot up. It felt good when it left my hand. I was happy it went in.

For the Miami Heat, losing game one is not the end all for the series.  While it is true that teams that have won Game 1 of The Finals are 47-19 in those series. Miami did beat the in last seasons finals, dropping Game 1 in Oklahoma City, but winning out the series in five games.

“We had some mental mistakes,” James said. “We played some really good basketball but in the fourth quarter we made some mistakes and this is one of the only teams you can’t have mistakes against.”

Game two is scheduled for Sunday night at American Airlines Arena, 8 p.m. Eastern.

 

Spurs await next foe, rest up and recouperate

The San Antonio Spurs are sure of one thing, June 6th they will be playing someone out of the Eastern Conference for a shot at the Larry O’Brien Trophy and that is a good ten days of rest for one of the older teams of the NBA.

“Is it 10 days, really?” Duncan said when asked whether the layoff and rest are worth the rust the team will accumulate. “It’s both. What are you gonna say? It’s both. We’re going to be a little rusty starting the first game. It’s just how it is. We’re going to figure out how to practice and stay sharp. But, bottom line, we’re going to be a little rusty.”

In the East, the Indiana Pacers have taken a (some would say surprising) 2-2 tie going into game 5. The Spurs hope it goes all seven for wear and tear on the both teams yes, but it will also give them time to study both teams flaws and figure out how to exploit those flaws.
