Team Silver beats Team Black

In their first official scrimmage of the new season, the Defending Champion San Antonio Spurs  split their team in two and carried on their annual Silver/Black Scrimmage.

While no official stats were kept, Danny Green led all scorers with 24 points as Coach Pop sat behind the coaching benches allowing his assistants to lead the two teams. Ettore Messina and Ime Ukoda with Team Silver, while Jim Boylen and Becky Hammon coached Team Black.

The only players not to play were Patty Mills (injury), Tiago Splitter (injury) and Boris Diaw (not present).

The Wounded Warriors program took the floor for a game before the scrimmage.

The Spurs kick off the preseason on the road against the Phoenix Suns at US Airways Center on October 16th.  Their home preseason opener is against their Finals foe, Miami Heat on October 18th.  Plenty of great seats and cheap tickets are still available so get yours now and cheer on your Defending NBA Champion San Antonio Spurs.

Spurs set NBA Finals Records after dismantling the Heat

San Antonio outscores Miami by 70 in the Finals

The San Antonio Spurs Dynasty is a fact of life in the NBA and the rest of the league may as well get used to it.  Not only did the Spurs disassemble the Heat in five games, they set a number of NBA records in doing it.

  • 70 points – Biggest point differential in NBA Finals History
  • Tim Duncan’s 158 Playoff Double doubles the best in NBA Playoff History
  • Duncan, Parker, Ginobili – The most successful trio in NBA history
  • 4 championship titles by Duncan, Parker, Ginobili matches Magic Johnson, Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, Michael Cooper and Kurt Rambis’ four in the 1980s
  • At age 22, Kwahi Leonard is the youngest Finals MVP since Tim Duncan (who was also 22) won his in 1999

There are still other records to list but one thing that cannot be shown in the record books was the sense of team on this squad.  They played as one unit and avenged their game seven loss in the 2013 NBA Finals to this same Heat team.

Execution stuns Heat

Duncan tops two NBA Playoff Records

The term built not bought began when a billboard was put up at the beginning of the NBA Finals series against the Miami Heat proclaiming “Built Vs Bought.” It is becoming ever more clear that that would be a correct statement as the Spurs took the Miami Heat to task in Game Four of the NBA Finals, thrashing the two-time defending Champions 107-86.

The only positive comments on the Spurs record breaking performances over the past two games have come from the Heat.  The Spurs have yet to say anything other than, they can get better.

“I’m pleased that they performed as well as they did while we’ve been in Miami and that’s about as far as it goes. Now, we’ve got to go home and play as well or better,” Spurs Head Coach Gregg Popovich said after the game.

“They played great and I can honestly say I don’t think any of us were expecting this type of performance. They (the Spurs) were great. You have to give them credit for that,” Heat Head Coach Eric Spoelstra said after the game

“They’re a high-oiled machine, and they move the ball extremely well,” Heat Superstar LeBron James said after the 107-86 loss in Game 4. “They put you in so many difficult positions. If you’re not right on time, right on target, they’re going to make you pay for it.”

And pay for it they did.  The Spurs shot a scorching 57.1% (54.2% through the series) while holding the Heat to 45% shooting.

Another highlight for the Spurs Organization was Tim Duncan becoming the All Time leader in NBA Playoff History surpassing LA Lakers Great Kareem Abdul-Jabbar as well as breaking the All Time Career NBA Playoff Double-Doubles record surpassing another Lakers Great, Magic Johnson.

“Congrats to Tim Duncan the new All-Time NBA Playoff Double-Double Leader!” was the tweet by Magic Johnson after game four.

“I can assure you he doesn’t care,” was the response given by Head Coach Gregg Popovich on Duncan’s achievements.

The Spurs arrived home to San Antonio after 3 AM to a nice crowd.
