Spurs drop game in Phoenix, prep for Heat

Five major components did not travel with the San Antonio Spurs in their contest against the Phoenix Suns.  Tim Duncan, Manu Ginobili and Coach Popovich did not travel with the team.  Pop is sick and the team is resting Duncan and Ginobili while Kawhi Leonard (eye infection), Tiago Splitter (calf strain) and Patty Mills (rotator cuff) are all recovering from injury.

Suns owner Robert Sarver took to the microphone with two minutes and change left and apologized for the lack of Defending Champion Stars present and said that if fans would send in ticket stubs, they would receive a free gift from the team.

The Spurs, meanwhile, are flying back to the Alamo City to prepare to take on the defending Eastern Conference Champion Miami Heat.   Plenty of great seats and cheap tickets are still available so be sue to get yours now and support the Defending NBA Champion Spurs!

Spurs drop game two

The Miami Heat rebounded from their exhausting loss in Game 1 of the NBA Finals, winning Game 2 against the San Antonio Spurs 98-96 in San Antonio at the AT&T Center Sunday Night. For the Spurs, it was their first home loss in these 2014 Playoffs and if not for James being on the floor, the Spurs would have taken this game as well.

“Just play the game, try to play the game the right way. However the flow of the game is going, I just try to impose my will in some kind of way,” James said afterward. “Just myself and my teammates in a position to succeed, and I was happy in the fact that I was able to make some plays to help us get the victory tonight.”

Spurs Head Coach Gregg Popovich knew going into the series that perfection for 48 minutes would be required to take out the Squad from Miami.

“LeBron did a great job at his end and we had to be really pretty perfect at the other end and we didn’t,” San Antonio coach Gregg Popovich said. “We didn’t take advantage. We made bad decisions. The ball stuck to us. We tried to do it individually and we’re not good enough to do that.”

Game 3 moves to Miami Tuesday night where Miami hopes to secure two more victories at home.  For the Spurs, the home loss made the “drive for five” a little harder but not impossible.

“Now we’re in a tough situation because we’ve got to go to Miami and get one there,” Ginobili said in post game comments.  “We don’t want to come back here down 3-1. It’s very hard to overcome that.”

Thunder even up series against Spurs

The San Antonio Spurs had hoped to steal a game from the Oklahoma City Thunder but, Serge Ibaka aside, Kevin Durant and Russell Westbrook had other ideas for the night.  The duo combined for 71 points and Westbrook set a career playoff five steals.

“I don’t know if it’s the best game we’ve ever played together, we ‘ve played so many games now but I think we have another level we can get to.”

Spurs Head Coach Gregg Popovich pulled the plug on his starters early on in the rout but the bench pulled within 12 points in the fourth quarter but Pop refused to put the starters back in, in an effort to preserve his aging trio of Duncan, Ginobili and Parker.

“Pop did a great job all season keeping us fresh,” Parker said.  “I understand his decision (to keep the starters on the bench), I trust his judgment and now I just have to be ready for Game 5.”
