Spurs streak ends at 19

February 21st thru April 3rd of 2014 will go down as the (one of the) fifth longest streaks in NBA History.  Come April 6th, it will be back to business for Gregg Popovich and his crew of merry grey beards.

“We never thought about the streak in the first place,” Popovich said after the loss to Oklahoma.  “To us, it is just another game.”

Such is the way it has been for many a season here in San Antonio for the Spurs and their fans.  Always the underdogs, no matter the record the team is currently sporting, the Spurs take their wins just like their losses; with zero complaint and zero fanfare.

“To us, it is just another game.”

A lot of coaches will tell you that but when Popovich says it, you take it at face value and accept it.  This loss, which Popovich has been waiting for, is perfectly timed out in the big scheme of things.  Losing to an athletic Thunder team on the 2nd night of a back to back, well the planets were aligned.  Rest assured that, should the Thunder and Spurs meet in the playoffs, they will play One game at a time…just like the well oiled machine they are.

“To us, it is just another game.”

Spurs notch 17th straight victory

A victory over the Pacers tonight could leave the Spurs undefeated in March

The San Antonio Spurs defeated the New Orleans Pelicans Saturday night to collect their 17th straight victory.  The Silver and Black have not lost in March and with a victory over the Indiana Pacers tonight will leave them undefeated in March.

While Head Coach Gregg Popovich is now looking for the next defeat, admitting he is waiting for the next defeat,  his team is riding the wave with their familiar low key approach.

“It is sweet to be a part of that,” SG Manu Ginobili said. “It is not something that happens very often because it is a long spread of game, a month or two. Here or there you have a bad game or the opponent has a bad one, but a lot of things have combined for us to have this type of streak. We played really well and we are healthy.”

The Spurs must defeat the Indiana Pacers on the road if they want to go undefeated.  The Pacers have dropped five of their last seven games and are now just one game ahead of the Miami Heat for the best in the East.

“We can’t figure out a way to perform better,” said center David West.  “We’ve done what you do, we’ve had team meetings. We’ve had players-only meetings. We’ve had players and the coaches (meetings). We’re kind of looking for answers right now, and things don’t get any easier.”

“Sleepers of the West” rock Heat at home

Miami never led in game two of the season match up.

The talk at the mid point of the season was that the “Old” San Antonio Spurs we able to beat up on sub-par teams but could not muster wins against the top tier teams of the league. And, quite frankly, they couldn’t.  But you never heard the “P” word – Panic- come from the organization and anyone who resides withing the Spurs viewing range were not really concerned, since it was the Spurs being the Spurs, after all.

And now, with less than 20 games remaining on the regular season schedule, the Spurs are beating those team that they “couldn’t beat.”  In the month of February, the Spurs took care of the Clippers (113-103), the Trailblazers the following day (111-109), the Mavericks (106-112), thumped Cleveland (122-101) while setting an All Time NBA Team Record for Assists then handled the Heat 87-111 who served up their worst performance of the year.

With 21 games remaining  with a handful of top tier teams on the schedule to include the Bulls, Blazers, Jazz, Pacers, Grizzlies, Thunder and the Rockets.  Be sure to get out and support your Spurs as they prepare for a run through the playoffs.  Great seats and tickets still remain!
