Rodeo Road Trip off to a Great Start

It’s that time of the year again for the San Antonio Spurs.  That special month of February when their home court is turned into a huge holding pen for the San Antonio Stock Show and Rodeo.  To date, the road trip has been used to firmly gel the team and get all healthy bodies on the right page and ready for the last portion of the NBA season.  With a 71-26 “Rodeo Road Trip” record, the Spurs have never fallen under .500.  This season, though may prove to be the hardest to date – since 2003.  This season, the trip includes stops in Toronto (lost), Indiana (won), Detroit, LA Clippers, Golden State, Portland, Utah, Phoenix.  There is every reason to believe that the Spurs will have trouble.  On the other hand, the Spurs thrive on the trip…so let’s play the games!

Spurs’ Ginobili worried “We’re not ready”

If the call had come from the usual pundits, then not much stock would be put into those words but the fact that it came from 3 time NBA Champion Manu Ginobili about his own team, lends credence of the statement.

The Spurs are a worrying 1-7 against the elite teams of the NBA including the Trailblazers (twice), the Thunder, the Rockets and the Pacers. The only win came against the LA Clippers who were without the services of All Star point guard Chris Paul.

“When it happens the first three times, four times, five times,” Ginobili said, “then you say, ‘Okay, things happen. The schedule and…’ Now it’s eight (losses), so there has to be a tendency now.”

The Spurs have a chance to add a victory against a top tier team in Oklahoma City this Wednesday.  Great tickets are still available!

Spurs cool the Heat in Game 5, prepare for Game 6

The San Antonio Spurs, those of silver and black who were supposedly too old to take the NBA’S biggest stage have roared back to take a defining 3-2 lead in the best of seven series with a114-104 thumping.

Argintinian Guard Manu Ginobili was reinserted into the starting lineup for the first time this season and responded with a solid game in which he scored 24 points and handed out 10 assists.

“He (Coach Popovich) told me yesterday that I was going to start because of the way they were playing, four smalls,” Ginobili said. “He told me to go ahead and play. Be more intuitive and don’t think so much.”

The Spurs relied on great defense and the hot shooting of second year player Danny Green, who set an NBA Finals record with 25 (and counting) three-pointers in the finals.

“I’ve been getting lucky,” Green said after the game. “I was moving around a lot. Our transition helps us, our pace. Tony penetrating and Manu penetrating, making the defense collapse is the reason why I’ve been getting open. Luckily, a couple have dropped for me.”

The Spurs can close the series and take home the Larry O’Brien Trophy tomorrow night when they meet the Heat for Game 6 at American Airlines Arena.

“We challenge ourselves to see if we’re a better team than we were,” Dwayne Wade said after the game.
