Green Posts new Franchise Record

The defending champion San Antonio Spurs, have been quietly taking care of business this year and, as the team always does, they have not cared to concern themselves with what every other team in the league was doing.  Pundits, as they always do, counted them out again as a step slower, a year older and not able to sustain the high play they showed in the 2014 NBA Playoffs.  Yet, the Spurs now find themselves in second place in the Western Conference with one final game against the New Orleans Pelicans left to play.

“We are just going to play the games,” Spurs coach Gregg Popovich said. “Wherever we end up, that’s what we’ll do. We can only control our game.”

In taking out the Phoenix Suns 107-91 yesterday afternoon, SG Danny Green set a new franchise record for made three pointers in a season once held by “The Rifleman” Chuck Pearson with 190.  Green ended the game with 191 made three’s.

“Both unbelievably great shooters in their time,” Forward Tim Duncan said. “Danny is really coming into his own now. He is comfortable in his role and what he has to do and what he is allowed to do.”

Spurs quest for greatness nearing completion

At the beginning of every season for the past decade, the San Antonio Spurs have been all but written off ‘old’ and they go through the slog of the long season, sometimes rife with injury, sometimes not but always showing up in the postseason.  The Admiral sets sail and they win.  Slam Duncan sets records in nearly all statistical categories over a 17 year career and still manages to average 13.6 points per game, 9.1 rebounds, 2.9 assists, 2.0 blocks shooting 50% from the floor and career high 7.% from the line in under 30 minutes a game.

And now, we are in the midst of the passing the throne.  First from Five-O to Duncan to Ginobili to Parker and now to Kawhi Leonard.

“It’s going to be Kawhi’s team, anyway,” Parker said. “Timmy transitioned to Manu, Manu transitioned to me, and now it’s going to be transitioned to Kawhi. I’ll try my best to stay aggressive and be involved, but Kawhi is going to be the man.”

That came after the Spurs sent their in-state rival Houston Rockets home confused and concerned in a 110-98 thumping.  Leonard, who has been averaging 19.9 ppg, 5.8 RPG, 2.8 steals and 2.7 assist over the past 10 games had an off night of 20 points, 3 rebounds, 2 assists and four steals.

“Give them credit, they took us out of our game and we couldn’t sustain anything in the second half,” Rockets coach Kevin McHale said.

The Rockets have another shot at the Spurs tomorrow night at home.  The Spurs are only half a game from taking the Southwest Division.  Plenty of great sets are still available so get yours today and help support your Spurs on The Road.

 

Spurs reign Thunder down on Oklahoma

Kawhi Leonard growing into “Go-To Player”

The reigning and defending NBA Champions have put the league on notice.  We will not go silently into the night.  Leading the way into the playoffs is the reigning and defending NBA Finals MVP, Kawhi Leonard who has simply been on fire over a two week stretch.

“He’s been absolutely amazing,” teammate Tim Duncan said. “He’s on a tear right now, and we’re riding him. He’s not doing it the wrong way. He’s taking great shots and continuing to be unselfish, but he’s absolutely being aggressive. That’s what we need from him.”

Leonard matched his career high 26 for the second night in a row as the Spurs blew by the struggling and injured Thunder 113-88.

“No matter how you slice it, it’s not a fair fight,” Head Coach Gregg Popovich said after the game. “Nobody’s going to give back the win. We’re going to take the win. I thought we played well, but you feel badly. You see Kevin in that chair out there and the other guys that are hurt and it’s not a fair fight.”

Fair fight or not, the Spurs are the hottest team in the NBA and the league has been put on notice.  The Houston Rockets certainly know what is happening South of their fair city as the two teams prepare to battle tonight at the AT&T Center and Friday in Houston.

“They’re a good team playing very well right now,” Rockets Coach Kevin McHale said of the Spurs. “They’re the defending champions and they’re healthy and on a roll. It will be a great test for us, especially in San Antonio. They just got done clobbering the Golden State Warriors there. They’re playing well. I watched the game and they’re doing what the Spurs do.”+
