Spurs second/third team nearly beat defending champs

In a move that would not normally be scrutinized, Spurs Head Coach Gregg Popovich decided to send his big three plus one back home to San Antonio to rest up and prepare for the NBA leading Memphis Grizzlies.

But, with rare exception, NBA Commissioner David Stern took umbrage with Pop’s move and found it necessary to issue the following statement:

“I apologize to all N.B.A. fans.  This was an unacceptable decision by the San Antonio Spurs, and substantial sanctions will be forthcoming.”

For Popovich, it is all about strategy and the health of his team.

“Perhaps it’ll give us an opportunity to stay on the court with Memphis on Saturday night,” Popovich told reporters before the game. “Historically, when you’re on a long road trip, that first game when you come home is really tough. And Memphis is one of the best teams in the league. They’re of much more concern to us than playing four games in five nights. It’s pretty logical.”

While there was no intentional snub on Pop’s part, he must have known that the commissioner would not appreciate the move with only two NBA games scheduled Thursday night.  But, when Popovich did pretty much the same thing back in April against the Utah Jazz, NBA Deputy Commissioner Adam Silver said the following:

“The strategic resting of particular players on particular nights is within the discretion of the teams.”

So whether or not the NBA decides to “sanction” the Spurs remains to be seen but it hardly matters to Pop as Gary Neal made this point.

“Coach Pop is the coach of the San Antonio Spurs, and he did what’s best for us.”

The Spurs face the Memphis Grizzlies on December 1st.

Spurs take out winless Wizards

In an all around effort, the Spurs beat the Washington Wizards 118-92 Monday night. The Spurs had seven players post double figures; Diaw had 16 points, Splitter 15 and 12 boards, Parker 15 points, Duncan 14 points, Neal 13 points, Ginobili 12 and Bonner 11 points.

”They carved us up pretty good tonight,” Wizards coach Randy Wittman said.

”We knew we were going to play a lot of guys and kind of keep our minutes down especially after the tough one last night. We came in here and we gave them (the bench) a little lead and guys stepped up and started making shots and we extended that lead. And it’s just great to sit there in the fourth quarter, especially after the game we had last night,” PF Tim Duncan said.

The Spurs next face the Orlando Magic (5-8) on Wednesday November 28th.

Spurs lose rough and tumble game against the LA Clippers

The San Antonio Spurs walked into the Staples Center looking to pick up their 5th consecutive victory of this early part of the season.  Possibly if it were the LA Lakers, that would have been possible, but they instead faced the winning LA team in the Clippers.

With the Clippers playing a form of street ball that the Spurs are unaccustomed to and the Spurs defense less than stellar while giving up 20 turnovers, the Clippers ran rough shod over the Silver and Black.

“We still remember what they did to us a couple months ago,” DeAndre Jordan said about the team that swept the Clippers out of the second round of the playoffs. “That was extra motivation.”

“They kicked our ass,” Spurs coach Gregg Popovich said. “They were more emotional, more aggressive, and it meant something to them for all the obvious reasons. We hung in there for a half, but after that I don’t think we played with the same intensity that they did, and it showed.”

The Spurs next home game is against the NY Knicks, November 15, 2012. Be sure to get your tickets and cheer on your San Antonio Spurs!
