Spurs and Mavericks hook up tonight

The San Antonio Spurs’ Kawhi Leonard was an absolute monster last night with a remarkable line of 11 of 18 from the floor for & 1-2 from the three point line for 24 points, 13  rebounds, four assists and four steals against the Phoenix Suns.

“Kawhi Leonard was spectacular on both ends of the court,” Spurs coach Gregg Popovich said.

“Kawhi is one of those guys defensively, he gets after it,” Suns Head Coach Jeff Hornacek said. “When he’s around the ball you’ve got to be strong with it and you’ve got to be able to get rid of it without getting it knocked away.”

For the incoming Mavericks, they have lost their last two games to the Thunder and Grizzlies, both on the road.  The loss to the Grizzlies taken particularly hard.

“I feel like we’re beating ourselves right now,” said Mavs guard Raymond Felton

“This is one of the better defensive teams in the league,” coach Rick Carlisle said of the Grizzlies. “Tomorrow we’re playing the best defensive team in the league [Spurs], by percentage and by numbers. We have to do better, and we will.”

Spurs still working into form, crush Knicks

The San Antonio Spurs have won their third straight game over the New York Knicks, 94-84 at Madison Square Garden but the significance of the game is one for the record books.  Spurs stalwart Tim Duncan posted team and NBA records on this night.  Duncan set the record for most wins with  a single team, eclipsing John Stockton’s 953 and looks to extend that record another 60 or more games this season, which should put it out of reach for a considerable time what with NBA players switching teams every two to four years.  Duncan will be breaking his own record every time he steps on the floor.

Thus far this year, Duncan has passed Alex English to move into 16th place All Time scoring, moved into 8th in Career Rebounding passing Nate Thurmond then two days later passed Patrick Ewing to move into 6th place career blocks.  He passed Moses Malone in April to move into 11th place NBA All Time career games and moved into 14th place passing Kevin Garnett in the NBA All Time Scoring list.

The Spurs take on the Wizards tomorrow night before heading back to the Alamo City for a game against the Charlotte Hornets.  Tickets for both games are still available so be sure to get out and support your Spurs either on the road or at home!

Spurs drop opener to Thunder

Nobody took for granted that the first game for the revamped San Antonio Spurs was going to be a cakewalk because they now sported a Big five instead of a big three.  And a cakewalk it was not.  What it was, though, was a hard scrabble match of X’s and O’s and two teams that sported players who looked as if in mid-season form.  In the end, the Spurs succumbed to a couple of ill timed errors and the will of Kevin Durant, Russell Westbrook and the entire Thunder squad that took the 112-106 win.  Kawhi Leonard led the Spurs with a career regular season high of 32 points while Westbrook finished the game with 33 points.

The Spurs will be back home for their own home opener tomorrow night against the Brooklyn Nets. Plenty of great seats and affordable tickets are still available so be sure to get yours today and help cheer on your San Antonio Spurs the Friday!
