Spurs dispose of T’Wolves, host Suns this Wednesday

The San Antonio Spurs kept their undefeated streak at the AT&T Center alive with a 101-95 victory over the visiting Minnesota Timberwolves on a night that saw the rare ejection of Head Coach Gregg Popovich.  The win added the Spurs to a very short list of Western Conference teams to have opened the season with a perfect 18-0 record at home.  Other teams to do it were the 1978 Trailblazers and the 1986 Houston Rockets.

The Spurs were led, in part, by Rookie Boban Marjanovic, who had to step up after LaMarcus Aldridge had a bad night offering only six points to the contest.  Marjanovic was a perfect 7-7 kicking in 17 points and four rebounds in under 15 minutes of play.

“I feel happy because I am part of this win,” Marjanovic said. “In the first half we played like, so-so, and in the second half much better and we showed we are a team. We showed in bad times that we can be a good team.”

“Both stretches he impacted well,” said Spurs assistant Ettore Messina, who took over for Popovich. “Not only with his game, that was a quality game, but also because he got the crowd involved, he got his teammates involved.”

The Spurs will go for home win number 19 tomorrow night against the Phoenix Suns in a Western Conference match.  Plenty of affordable tickets and great seats are still available so be sure to get yours today and be a part of Spurs History!

Spurs add two more to roster

The San Antonio Spurs are on a continuing mission to find shooters and have landed former Pelicans guard Jimmer Fredette.   Fredette, the former 10th overall pick in the 2011 NBA Draft by the Milwaukee Bucks, was immediately traded to the Sacramento Kings.  After two seasons with Sacramento, he spent the 13-14 season with the Bulls before signing on with New Orleans.  Fredette is a career .485 FG shooter while shooting .381 from beyond the arc.

The Spurs also inked the reigning Summer League Champion MVP Jonathon Simmons.  In the NBASL, Simmons averaged 17.0 points, 4.0 rebounds, 3.0 assists and 1.71 steals in 24.6 minutes per game.  Simmons also shot above 50% (51.9) from the field and was a 70% free throw shooter.

The Spurs open the preseason against the Phoenix Suns.  Plenty of individual and season tickets are still available so be sure to get yours today and help cheer on your San Antonio Spurs.

Spurs in yet another Championship Game tonight

2014 draft pick Anderson named NBASL MVP

The good news for the San Antonio Spurs continues to roll in as the Becky Hammond led Spurs Summer League team has advanced to the finals, scheduled for tonight, against the Phoenix Suns only on NBA TV.  Kyle Anderson, the Spurs 30th pick in the first round of the 2014 draft, led the Spurs team with 22 ppg, 5.8 rpg, 1.5 apg and 1.3 steals per game.  He becomes the first Spurs Summer League MVP.

The team made news from the start as Team President Gregg Popovich named former WNBA All Star and current Spurs Assistant Becky Hammon as the Spurs SL Head Coach, the first in NBA History.

“She has such a great opportunity in front of her,” said Hall of Fame player Nancy Lieberman. “And it’s fantastic. They couldn’t have chosen anyone better than Becky. We’ve been friends for years and I’m so proud of her.”

The Championship Game against the Suns  is scheduled for tonight and available on NBA TV with a 9 pm EST start.
