Budenholzer listed among top NBA potential coaching candidates

Spurs lead assistant coach Mike Budenholzer has made the big time.

Budenholzer was listed Friday morning by Peter Vescey in his New York Post column among theafter the season concludes.

Such attention isn’t surprising for Budenholzer, considering his work with the Spurs over the last 15 seasons. It’s merely a matter of when and not if that he picks up his own NBA coaching gig to join former Spurs assistants under Gregg Popovich like Mike Brown and P.J. Carlesimo in running their own teams.

Obviously, an extended run in the upcoming playoffs would serve as a billboard for Budenholzer and his coaching talents.

He’s got the longest tenure on the Spurs’ basketball operations along with general manager R.C. Buford after both were hired by Popovich in the summer of 1994.

It would be interesting if Budenholzer would jump to an NBA head coaching position if he gets his chance.

Or would he remain with the franchise in his likely current position as the heir apparent as the Spurs’ coach when Popovich chooses to retire.
