Spurs in yet another Championship Game tonight

2014 draft pick Anderson named NBASL MVP

The good news for the San Antonio Spurs continues to roll in as the Becky Hammond led Spurs Summer League team has advanced to the finals, scheduled for tonight, against the Phoenix Suns only on NBA TV.  Kyle Anderson, the Spurs 30th pick in the first round of the 2014 draft, led the Spurs team with 22 ppg, 5.8 rpg, 1.5 apg and 1.3 steals per game.  He becomes the first Spurs Summer League MVP.

The team made news from the start as Team President Gregg Popovich named former WNBA All Star and current Spurs Assistant Becky Hammon as the Spurs SL Head Coach, the first in NBA History.

“She has such a great opportunity in front of her,” said Hall of Fame player Nancy Lieberman. “And it’s fantastic. They couldn’t have chosen anyone better than Becky. We’ve been friends for years and I’m so proud of her.”

The Championship Game against the Suns  is scheduled for tonight and available on NBA TV with a 9 pm EST start.

Spurs pull out victory on the road

The defending champions San Antonio Spurs came into Los Angeles cool as cucumbers.  They held a shoot around while their worthy nemesis Los Angeles Clippers took it easy and tried to play cool.  When it came down to the final quarter of a hotly contested game, the Clippers melted under their coolness, providing an unforced error to the Spurs, allowing them to escape back to the River City with one goal in mind.  The first to four.

Providing the escape was a fluke play by DeAndre Jordon.  After Clippers Center Blake Griffin lofted a shot to the bucket, Jordon tipped the ball into the cylinder as the ball spun inside the bucket.

“I can’t blame anybody for that but me,” he said. “I was trying to make a play on the ball, but it ended up being a dumb play.”Jordon, who had a stellar 30-14-7 game, said.

“We got lucky,” Spurs Guard Manu Ginobili said after the epic game.  “The ball was going in.”

Old Man Riverwalk, Tim Duncan came up with a huge block on Blake Griffin when it mattered most, in the final minute of the game.

“His timing is just impeccable,” Spurs Coach Gregg Popovich said. “He has a hard time jumping over the proverbial piece of paper, and he gets in position. He knows where to be. He’s played long enough.”

Spurs take Game 2

The San Antonio Spurs knew that the Clippers did what they were supposed to do in game 1, that is, defend home court.  The Spurs, knowing that taking one from the Clippers was a necessity, did so Wednesday late night and into early Thursday morning in a hard fought 117-107 overtime victory.  Tim Duncan led the way with 28 points and the new Defensive Player of the Year, Kawhi Leonard chipped in 23 points on a night that point guard Tony Parker went down with an Achilles injury.  Coach Popovich was asked about Parker’s status after the game.

“I honestly don’t know,” Popovich said. “He went to the locker room and didn’t come back.”

The Spurs will need Parker if they want to defend their title in this years NBA Playoffs and his teammate Tim Duncan knows Parker will do what he has to to be on the court Friday night for game 3.

“I hope he’s able to play and play well for us,” Duncan said. “We need him for that. He’s a big part of what we do. So him not at 100 percent hurts us. But we’ll see. He’s a gamer. He’s going to go, and he’s going to get treatment for the next 48 hours. And when that ball goes up, I guarantee he’ll be out there because that’s the kind of player he is.”
