Clipper Darrell cries after being kicked out of ‘Lob City’

There’s something about live television that brings out the rawest of emotions.

Take this of a broadcast of Los Angeles television station KABC’s Sports Zone interview of “Clipper Darrell” Bailey, perhaps the most notable fan of the Los Angeles Clippers during their struggling era.

It must have been hard for Bailey to support the team during its moribund past.

But Bill Plaschke’s indicates that Bailey might have gotten too big for his blue-and-red performing suit as he attempted to become a paid spokesman for the team.

The Clippers have told Bailey they would not stop him from representing them, but would simply insist that he follow the same rules that apply to every other employee in his appearances.

“Like any company, we would need control over him and his message,” Clippers vice president of marketing and sales Carl Lahr told the Los Angeles Times. “He is using our name and our colors, and we would like control over how that is done.”

When the Clippers got hot, apparently “Clipper Darrell” decided to change his message and capitalize on the team’s sizzle.

“Somewhere along the line, he stopped being a super fan and became a marketer,” Lahr said. “He got to the point where he wanted this to be a commercial enterprise.”

The Clippers told Plaschke they they actually offered Bailey a chance to be treated exactly like a Clippers cheerleader, with a $70 nightly salary but no unsanctioned interviews or appearances, and he refused.

“He’s a really good person, but he told us he’s in this to make money,” Lahr said. “Once that happens, that changes the whole fan dynamic.”

The Clippers return home next week. It will be interesting to see if their superfan is rooting for  them in the arena.

But it wouldn’t suprise me if we saw “Laker Darrell” at other games at the Staples Center in the not-too-distant future.

Here’s a look at “Clipper Darrell’s” recent appearance on KABC. Bailey’s emotion gets the best of him when he starts crying at about the 2:10 mark of the video.

Parker a side note to All-Star circus

ORLANDO, Fla. — Kobe Bryant took down Michael Jordan. Kevin Durant took aim at Wilt Chamberlain.

Dwight Howard launched 3-pointers in what could be his de facto swan song in Orlando. LeBron James led a furious comeback.

Watching all the storylines unfold in the West’s 152-149 victory in the NBA All-Star Game at the Amway Center on Sunday, more fan than participant, was Spurs point guard Tony Parker.

“I was just happy to be a part of it,” Parker said.

Make no mistake. Parker is a star in his own right, his berth in Sunday’s game earned by the sweat of carrying the injury-plagued Spurs to the Western Conference’s second-best record.

He’s got a little Hollywood in him, too, more at home in the eye of Saturday’s celebrity-driven, rock-star spectacle than, say, Tim Duncan ever could be.

But somewhere amid the circus, between Russell Westbrook bouncing alley-oops to himself off the backboard and Howard firing away from 3-point range, Parker began to feel the pull of Gregg Popovich.

He was ready to come home.

“I had a great time,” Parker said. “But I’m ready to go home and get some rest.”

Durant, the Oklahoma City star and NBA’s two-time defending scoring leader, pumped in 36 points to earn Most Valuable Player honors. He briefly flirted with the All-Star Game’s 50-year-old scoring record — 42 points set by Chamberlain in 1962.

Bryant, meanwhile, did rewrite the record book. His 27 points pushed him past Jordan as the All-Star Game’s all-time leading scorer with 271 in 14 appearances. Jordan had 262 in 13 games.

Parker, an amateur NBA historian who grew up a fan of Jordan, was among the impressed.

“That’s got to be an amazing feeling for him, because Michael Jordan is one of the best in the history of the game,” Parker said.

Looming over the entire weekend was the question of Howard, the towering center who has requested a trade from Orlando. The home crowd cheered him before the game, when he took the mic and welcomed the audience to a city he designs to leave.

Throughout the weekend, Howard has declined to answer questions about his future — “If it’s not about All-Star Weekend, I don’t want to talk about it,” he said — and stuck to that script after Sunday’s game.

If it was a farewell party of sorts for Howard, it was a bizarre one. He scored a pedestrian nine points to go with 10 rebounds and jacked up four unsuccessful 3-pointers.

Instead, it was James and Miami teammate Dwyane Wade who led the East back from a 21-point deficit. James ended with 36 points, while Wade notched 24 points, 10 rebounds and 10 assists for the third triple-double in All-Star history. James had one last year.

After Deron Williams missed a potential go-ahead 3-pointer in the waning moments, James wound up with the ball after the rebound but promptly turned it over to Blake Griffin, ending the East’s best shot at victory.

“I can’t turn the ball over like that,” James said. “I let my team down.”

Making his fourth All-Star appearance, Parker was just delighted to be in the building for it all. He played 12 minutes, a number that surely made Popovich happy, scoring six points with four assists.

When the night was over, the requisite postgame interviews completed, Parker left the Amway Center for a plane waiting at the Orlando airport. All-Star Weekend was over. It is time to get back to work. Derrick Rose and the Chicago Bulls loom Wednesday.

Asked if he would have liked a greater chance to be a bigger star in a room full of them, Parker laughed.

“I’m good,” he said. “We’ve got a big game against D-Rose on Wednesday, so I’m good.”

Rondo’s monster triple-double, Williams’ 57 pace Sunday’s S&Ds

It was a day for statistical milestones for point guards across the NBA on Sunday.

Rajon Rondo started the superlatives by ripping New York for 18 points, 17 rebounds and 20 assists in Boston’s 115-111 overtime victory over New York.

And Deron Williams eruputed for a franchise-record 57 points to lead New Jersey’s 104-101 triumph at Charlotte.

According to the Elias Sports Bureau, the last player to record a triple-double with at least 17 in each category was Magic Johnson, who had 24 points, 17 assists and 17 rebounds on April 18, 1989. The last player to exceed Rondo’s performance in each category was Wilt Chamberlain, who had 22 points, 25 rebounds and 21 assists on Feb. 2, 1968.

It was Rondo’s second triple-double in the last three games and his NBA-leading fourth triple-double of the season.

“That’s the Rondo we like to see, playing with all that energy,” Boston forward Paul Pierce told the Associated Press after the game. “He got the guys the ball in open spots; he did everything for us tonight. He rebounded, he passed, he got the clutch rebound there in overtime and got the layup. That’s the Rondo I like to see.”

And Williams scored the most points in the NBA this season as he topped the previous New Jersey franchise single-game scoring record of 52 points shared by Ray Williams and Mike Newlin.

“You really don’t pay attention to it,” Deron Williams told the AP. “It’s just one of those games where you start feeling good and let it go.”

Both had monster games leading them to the top of Sunday’s Studs and Duds.

STUDS

New Jersey G Deron Williams: Erupted for a franchise-record 57 points, along with six rebounds, seven assists and was plus-11 in the Nets’ victory at Charlotte.

Boston G Rajon Rondo: Singed New York for 18 points, 17 rebounds and 20 assists and was plus-5 to lead the Celtics’ overtime victory over  New York.

Chicago G Derrick Rose: Went for 35 points, four rebounds and eight assists and was a team-best plus-11 in the Bulls’ victory at Philadelphia.

Los Angeles Lakers G Kobe Bryant: Went for 33 points and was plus-8 in the Lakers’ victory over  Miami.

Denver G Ty Lawson: Notched 22 points, nine rebounds, 11 assists and was a team-best plus-6 in the Nuggets’ victory at San Antonio.

DUDS

Miami G Dwyane Wade: His rematch with Bryant didn’t really materialize as he hit 7 of 17 from the field, had five turnovers and fouled out in the Heat’s loss at the Lakers.

Toronto F Linas Kleiza: Went 2 of 9 from the field with two turnovers and was a team-worst minus-9  in the Raptors’ victory over Golden State.

Phoenix F Markieff Morris: Missed all seven shots with a turnover in the Suns’ victory over Sacramento.

Philadelphia G Lou Williams: Clanked  all seven field-goal attempts in the Sixers’ loss to Chicago.

Golden State F Dorrell Wright: Went 1 for 9 from the field with a turnover and was minus-3 in the Warriors’ loss at Toronto.
