Spurs look forward to a tough weekend schedule

It wasn’t flashy nor pretty but the San Antonio Spurs victory over the Denver Nuggets set the tone for the rest of the weekend which features NBA heavyweights the LA Clippers and the Miami Heat.

The clock continues to turn back for Spurs PF Tim Duncan who finished the game with 23 points, 14 rebounds, 5 blocks and a steal.

“It’s a great win to start this homestand here,” Duncan said. “We’ve got some really tough games this part of the schedule down the stretch here. It’s going to be tough for us, so we need to win everyone we can get.”

The Clippers come to the AT&T Center tonight and are coming off a 105-91 victory over the New Orleans Hornets.  The extra emphasis for the Clippers (if one is needed against the top seeded Spurs) it’s that with a victory over the Spurs, the Clippers can clinch the best season in franchise history.

“At the beginning of the season, we set some goals for the team,” coach Vinny Del Negro told the team’s official website Tuesday. “Obviously, to win the division. It’s all about improving throughout the season. I expect a lot from this team, but more importantly they expect a lot from themselves. We just want to play as consistently as possible, count them up at the end and hopefully be healthy going into the playoffs.”

The Miami Heat are coming off a 97-101 loss to the Chicago Bulls and face the New Orleans Hornets Friday night and the Spurs on Sunday.

Spurs clinch 14th straight 50-win season

Face Golden State Warriors next on Wednesday

Tim Duncan carried the team during Saturday’s 119-113 victory over the Cleveland Cavaliers with a remarkable 30 points, 12 rebounds, five blocks and four assists while just the night before he logged an astounding 28-points and 19-rebounds against Dallas Mavericks.

“Tim saved our ass. He obviously carried the whole night for us, he was great,” Spurs coach Gregg Popovich said after the Cleveland game. “But it shouldn’t have to be that way. We had one good quarter, decent quarter, of defense—the fourth. Up until that point it was embarrassing defense.”

Friday night, with their victory over the Mavericks, the Spurs logged another kudo in the NBA record books by securing their 14th straight 50-win season.

Spurs hand Lakers 5th loss in a row

Look to disarm 23-10 Grizzlies

The San Antonio Spurs put the Los Angeles Lakers in a place they haven’t been in since April 10, 2011 – the last time they lost five consecutive games. This time though, the righting of the ship is nowhere in sight.

But for the Spurs, their focus is now on the team that is trailing them by only 2.5 games.  The San Antonio Spurs come visiting a Memphis Grizzlies team that is riding a three game winning streak and, even though the Spurs have won the last five games between them, they are not taking them lightly especially after they eliminated the veteran Spurs from the 2010-11 Playoffs.

“You never forget those kinds of series,” Spurs guard Tony Parker said. “Memphis is playing well so it’s going to be a tough game.”

The Grizzlies also come into the game with a league leading 89.1 scoring defense while the Spurs have struggled from the 3-point line over their last two road games shooting 15 of 55 (27.3 percent). In comparison, against the Lakers, they shot 12 of 25 (48.0 percent).

“We’re just going to have to play a little bit better,” Parker said. “That’s the NBA season, you’re going to have ups and downs.”
