Spurs melding into championship form

The defending NBA Champion San Antonio Spurs have been on a terror as of late winning 13 of their last 16 games, the past few of them against playoff contenders.  Whether on the road or at home, the Spurs just keep on winning.  The Memphis Grizzlies were their latest victim, taking a 103-89 whipping by the champs in San Antonio.  The team was lead by Kawhi Leonard’s 25 and 10.

“What Kawhi did today was incredible and it was fun to watch,” teammate Manu Ginobili said.

What Leonard “did” was use huge mismatches to get just about whatever shot he wanted.  Leonard went on to score 15 points in the 4th quarter on 6-7 shooting including a 3-pointer.

“We went to him and he went to himself,” head coach Gregg Popovich said. “It was little bit of both. He was rolling and he felt it.”

“I was getting the shots that I wanted,” Leonard said. “Guys were looking for me and they fell.”

Duncan eclipses another record in win over Pelicans

The San Antonio Spurs work collectively as a team so when one member charts an accomplishment, there had better be a win behind it or it will be overlooked.  So when Tim Duncan passed NBA legend and former Washington Bullet (now Wizards) to move into 10th place in all time rebounding, oh and the other thing, tying  Karl Malone for 5th all time in double-doubles,  in the slim victory over the Pelicans mattered more.

There was Tim Duncan, now 10th all time rebounder and 5th all time double-doubler tipping in the go ahead basket with .7 seconds remaining.  With Boris Diaw inbounding, Duncan, draped by Pelicans, flipped a shot into the bucket taking the game into the fourth overtime game in recent weeks.

“If you don’t get up for the Spurs, it’s tough,” New Orleans forward Anthony Davis said. “They’re a championship-caliber team. They bring it every night. That makes you put out your best performance and that’s just what we try to do when we play them.”

In overtime, the Spurs fell behind by six early on but the Spurs battled back off of two Manu buckets and then Tim Duncan was at the line.  The first bucket went in giving the Spurs a two point advantage.  Duncan missed the second on purpose forcing the Pelicans’ to lob a last second shot but to no avail.   The Spurs walk out with a 95-93 victory.

Parker shines as bright as new Championship Rings

Tony Parker hit the go ahead three pointer with a minute seven remaining in the game, but Parker was hitting from all over the floor on this night.   Parker was 9-15 from the field and 4-4 from the three point line and led the Spurs in scoring with 23 points in nearly 35 minutes of playing time.  The Mavericks Monta Ellis led all scorers with 26 points in a 101-100 Spurs thriller.

“It was a great basketball game, you can’t kick off the season with a better game than this for the fans — there’s no way,” Dallas coach Rick Carlisle said. “Unfortunately, the slim margins of winning and losing are all that anybody remembers. If we get one more stop one more basket than we’re all him here singing a different tune. That’s the world we live in the Western Conference.”

The Spurs began the night with the unveiling of the 2014 Championship Banner and Rings and ended with their 5th opening season victory in a row following a championship.

“It’s special,” Ginobili said. “I think it helps you actually. Sometimes you don’t play that sharp because it’s the first game of the season. You have to move from the success of the previous season to the new beginning. But it all gets your emotions up so you want to get out on the court and do a lot of things, hustle, jump, run and win.”

With the victory, Head Coach Gregg Popovich is now 17-1 in season opening games and leads all coaches in NBA history with that mark.
