Spurs bump off Suns

The San Antonio Spurs were without the services of one Kawhi Leonard who was out with stomach problems but a surging LaMarcus Aldridge stepped up again and carried the Spurs on his shoulder to help beat the Suns 119-98.  Aldridge and company had a rough start to the game as Phoenix seemingly hit every shot in the first half (actually they shot a blistering 67.6%) and took a six point lead into half time.

”They really got into us physically and did a great job denying passing lanes and really gave themselves a chance to win,” Spurs coach Gregg Popovich said. ”I just think our experience kind of took over in the end.”

The Spurs came out in the second half and played crushing defense, holding the Suns to 18 third quarter points and 16 fourth quarter points.  Manu Ginobili scored all 12 of his points in the second half.

”I try to bring it every game,” Ginobili said. ”Sometimes it’s hard, sometimes things don’t go your way. At halftime, we were frustrated with the way we were playing. So, we all brought it in the second half. We played a lot better.”

Spurs dismiss upgraded Warriors squad

Leonard sets new personal record.

The defending Western Conference Champions didn’t have a chance last night no matter that it was their home court season opener San Antonio Spurs star and reigning Defensive Player of the Year showed that his offense has taken yet another leap forward.  Leonard finished the game with 35 points on 10 of 21 shooting, 15-15 from the charity stripe, five rebounds, five steals, three assists with two turnovers in 32-minutes.

“We got punched in the mouth,” Draymond Green said. “I don’t know if it was quite a bad thing for us.”

“If there was an outcome I wasn’t expecting, it was this one,” the SpursManu Ginobili said. “A 29-point lead against a team like them? I truly didn’t expect it.”

And yet, one game does not make a season.

The Warriors had trouble with (and will continue to) the Spurs Bigs and they had no answer for the Aldridge/Gasol/Leonard points in the paint.

“No, I didn’t see losing by 29 points,” Warriors Head Coach Steve Kerr said. “It’s going to be an ugly tape to watch. … I think our spurs-1guys were embarrassed tonight. I know I was.”

“It’s a nice little slap in the face,” Stephen Curry said. “First game you want to come out and protect your home court and have the energy of the home opener live throughout the game. We didn’t do anything to let that happen.”

Leonard also had help from his 2nd year Spur LaMarcus Aldridge, who looked very comfortable on the floor with and without new center Pau Gasol.  Aldridge finished the game with 26 points, 14 rebounds and was 5-6 from the line.  Jonathan Simmons, who nearly stole the show, came off the bench to score 20 points on 8-14 shooting which also included a monster block on Steph Curry and a emphatic slam dunk in the closing seconds of the game.  Simmons, Ginobili and Patty Mills led the bench scoring 54-16 over the warriors.

Spurs put away Grizzlies, await winner of Thunder/Mavericks

The San Antonio Spurs have completed a sweep of their first round opponent, only their ninth in franchise history, and sent the Memphis Grizzlies home for the summer with a 116-95 game four in Memphis.

“It wasn’t a fair fight,” Spurs coach Gregg Popovich said. “Whoever was available came out and played, and they executed to the best of their ability. They played with a lot of heart and a lot of fortitude.”

The Spurs were again led in scoring by Kawhi Leonard with 21 points and LaMarcus Aldridge’s 10 rebounds.  Leonard has led the team in scoring for the series with a 21.2 average while Aldridge led in rebounding with 8.5 per game and TP9 in assists with 5.3 per game.

The Spurs will now await the winner of the Thunder/Mavericks match up.  The Thunder lead the series three games to one and could close it out tonight
