Mavs to host streaking Spurs

The San Antonio Spurs have set another mark in franchise history by moving past the 1977-78 Portland Trailblazers record of 27 straight wins at home after beating the New Orleans Pelicans 110-97 at the AT&T Center last night.  The team was led by newcomer LaMarcus Aldridge who exploded for 36 points, six rebounds and three blocks.

“The ball has been going in,” Aldridge said. “I’m taking the shots and making them. Playing more confident and more like myself and I think that the team has fed off that energy.”

The big man’s play has come on at a time when Superstar Tim Duncan has missed multiple games but there is no argument that Duncan’s presence is sorely missed in the middle.

“LaMarcus is feeling more and more comfortable all the time as the season progresses,” San Antonio coach Gregg Popovich said. “I thought he was magnificent on both ends. Anthony (Davis) got three points in the fourth quarter, and LaMarcus did a great job on him. So, I thought he was special.”

The Spurs will travel down the IH-10 corridor for a meeting against in-state rivals The Dallas Mavericks tomorrow night at American Airlines Arena.  Plenty of great seats and affordable tickets are still available so be sure to get yours today and lets cheer on your Spurs in Big D!

Duncan eclipses another record in win over Pelicans

The San Antonio Spurs work collectively as a team so when one member charts an accomplishment, there had better be a win behind it or it will be overlooked.  So when Tim Duncan passed NBA legend and former Washington Bullet (now Wizards) to move into 10th place in all time rebounding, oh and the other thing, tying  Karl Malone for 5th all time in double-doubles,  in the slim victory over the Pelicans mattered more.

There was Tim Duncan, now 10th all time rebounder and 5th all time double-doubler tipping in the go ahead basket with .7 seconds remaining.  With Boris Diaw inbounding, Duncan, draped by Pelicans, flipped a shot into the bucket taking the game into the fourth overtime game in recent weeks.

“If you don’t get up for the Spurs, it’s tough,” New Orleans forward Anthony Davis said. “They’re a championship-caliber team. They bring it every night. That makes you put out your best performance and that’s just what we try to do when we play them.”

In overtime, the Spurs fell behind by six early on but the Spurs battled back off of two Manu buckets and then Tim Duncan was at the line.  The first bucket went in giving the Spurs a two point advantage.  Duncan missed the second on purpose forcing the Pelicans’ to lob a last second shot but to no avail.   The Spurs walk out with a 95-93 victory.

There is little time to regroup as the Spurs next face the Washington Wizards tomorrow night.  Plenty of great seats and affordable tickets are still available so get yours now and help cheer on your Defending NBA Champion Spurs!

Duncan mentors young Hornets during recent visit

For a group of young, hungry players, there probably couldn’t be a better mentor than a future Hall of Famer like Tim Duncan. So when Hurricane Isaac forced the New Orleans Hornets to relocate their volunteer workouts to San Antonio for a couple of days, they jumped at the opportunity to work with one of the NBA’s grand masters. (Or, as the Wu-Tang Clan might call Timmy, a battle-scarred shogun.)

recounted their experience yesterday, in which nine players — including top draft picks Anthony Davis and Austin Rivers — went through a battery of informal workouts and drills at San Antonio’s practice facility. Even Ryan Anderson, a grizzled vet compared to his teenage teammates, said it was a thrill to work with Duncan.

“Obviously, Tim was around, and there’s not a better guy to learn from,’’ said Anderson, a 6-foot-10 forward whom the Hornets acquired in a sign-and-trade deal from the Orlando Magic in July. “He is such a great leader and just talking with him was a positive experience in San Antonio.’’

Davis, who asked for restaurant guidance on Twitter during his visit, couldn’t be reached for comment in the story. But one can only imagine what the top pick in the draft soaked up from Duncan, even in just a few days. Should make for an interesting sidebar when the two teams meet in New Orleans on Oct. 31 for the season opener.
